The census is a record of all those who reside in a municipality; in this case, the municipality of Barcelona. Registration with the census (empadronamiento) is also a way of proving that your normal residence is in a particular municipality and it is essential for any related formalities (family reunification, NIE document, etc.)
What documents do I need to present?
- If you are renting: Valid rent contract
- If the contract for your flat is not in your name: Authorisation for municipal registration signed by the person shown on the rent contract or the owner of the flat The complete names and ID numbers of that person and yourself must appear. - If you live in a student residence: Authorisation for municipal registration signed and stamped by the person responsible (with the name, address and tax ID of the organisation running the residence).
- If you live in your own flat: Ownership deed for the property where the person who is registering is shown as being the owner. If it is leased, you will also need an authorisation from the leaseholder and a copy of his or her ID document.
